POLITICAL BACKDROP
Assam has witnessed political upheavals since Independence in 1947.
Nonetheless, the party that has been having political sway in the state has been the Indian National Congress (INC).
In 1978 the Janata Party took over power from the INC. The Janata Party had to suffer defeat after two years when the INC took charge of the reins of power.
However, following the mass agitation against the influx of aliens from Bangladesh, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) took over the reins of power in 1985.
The INC took charge in April 2006. This political party is still in power.
POLITIAL TRENDS IN ASSAM
Certain significant trends have been quite marked in the political firmament of the state.
First, the people of the state generally vote that political party to power that holds the reins of power in the Centre. This has been due to the realization that the gamut of development projects would be more.
Second, the political parties draw their strength from the youth force. Their youth wings are quite active.
Third, the time has come in Assam when the political parties cannot afford to ignore the demands of the minorities. Among the minorities are the religious minorities like the Christians and the Muslims.
The political equation is also determined by the linguistic factor.
Above all, the tribal voters also form political lobbies. Each of the political parties in Assam has its tie-up with the local tribal political parties in the tribal belts. Political analysts feel that once the tribal parties come together with some political, social, developmental or other issues they can call the shots in the corridors of power.
There are also the voters who are from the other states of India and who have settled down here for business or government job purposes. Such voters also play an important role in the formation process of the government in the state.
