North East India:
Where Virgin Forest Weds Cultural Diversity

Welcome to this enchanting world of unmatched wonder - the north-eastern part of India! Located on the foothills of the eastern Himalayan ranges, the climate of this region is also diverse.

GEOGRAPHICAL NOTATION

The North East part of India is made up of India is constituted of eight states. Of them, Sikkim is deemed as the brother state while the others are the sister states.

The sister states were part of a geographical location. They are located in the far north-eastern part of India.

NORTH EAST INDIA: STRATEGIC LOCATION

The Northeast is also strategically located.

Though there are eight states, seven states are located in the commonly identified north-eastern region, These are Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, and Sikkim. All of them are in the extreme far east of India. This entire unit stands as a sentinel in the northeast and east of India.

There are two countries with which the north-eastern part of the country shares common border. On the north is China; there is Myanmar on the east; and there is Bangladesh on the south.

NATURAL BACKDROP OF THE 7 SISTER STATES AND 1 BROTHER STATE

The only state situated on the far western side and not at all connected by any geographical umbilical cord is Sikkim. This state is the latest entry into the family.

Interestingly enough, Sikkim is not at all geographically - insofar as affinity is concerned - linked with the other six sister states. This is because among the closely situated geographical states there are only the six NE states. They are connected with the Indian union via the north-eastern portion of another state of India, viz., West Bengal only by the 'chicken neck' or the small corridor on the top-most or northern part portion of Bangladesh.

One can travel to the brother state of Sikkim from the other seven sister states or go from the seven sister states to the brother state of Sikkim only after traversing West Bengal. This journey is from the west to east or vice versa.

SIKKIM & ARUNACHAL PRADESH: POLITICAL HOTSPOTS

Despite the established fact that Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh are integral parts of the largest democratic country of the India - India - both the states have been the eyesore of China.

There have been diplomatic debates and discussions followed by wars of words reported regularly in the media between the two countries - India and china - over the possessions rights of these two states.

Nevertheless, the people of both these states as well the union government of India is steadfast to stake their claim as to the one political as well as cultural, religious and historical unity of the two states vis-a-vis the controversial Chinese claim.

NE INDIA: GEOGRAPHIC AFFINITY

Viewed geographically, the entire northeastern part of India, including Sikkim, is interlinked. The region is typical as it has many affinities with the cultural trends and religious beliefs of the people of North East India.

There are quite indigenous strategies of dealing with one another, particularly among the communities. Some are animists, many are Hindis and Christians.

For instance, the majority of the people are Sikkimese who professes the Buddhist religion as in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and the other NE states.

Besides, there are the Nepalis who are die-hard Hindus in Sikkim. Therefore many of the beliefs and cultural traditions are akin to their brethren in the other seven north-eastern state of India.
