In the local parlance, the term ‘Unakoti’ means one less than a crore. The name of the place has a special significance as it refers to the largest sculpture in bas relief in India.
Unakoti is a pilgrimage spot for the Hindus particularly for the shaivaites (devotees of Lord shiva). It is this massive lone sculpture of Lord Shiva that adorns the hill slopes.
This huge bas-relief sculpture was created during the 7th and 9th centuries.
Unakoti is situated 186 km from Agartala.
