The Tripura Sundari temple is deemed as one of the 51 holiest pilgrimage spots (pithas) by the Hindus. According to hindu mythology, the pithasthans are the spots where various parts of the Goddess sati – wife of Lord Shiva – fell when Lord Vishnu cut the body into pieces. The popular belief is that the ‘right foot’ of Goddess sati fell at this spot. Hence was built the temple.
The Tripura Sundari temple was constructed during the regime of Tripuri king Maharaja Dhanya Manikya in 1501 A.D.
Situated atop a hill top in Udaipur, the sanctum santorum of this temple has been designed in the typical Bengali hut format. There is a magnificent lake in front of the temple. It has a conical dome.
On its eastern side is the ‘Kalyan Sagar’ lake which is home to varied species of fishes and tortoises which are of huge sizes. Fishing is completely prohibited here. The devotees and tourists feed these aquatic creatures with ‘muri’ (puffed rice) and biscuits.
The Tripura Sundari temple is located 56 km from Agartala.
