SHREE-SHREE GOVINDAJEE TEMPLE
Another famous tourist destination spot within Imphal City is the Shree-Shree Govindajee Temple.
This temple is located within the main bazaar area of Imphal City. The Shree-Shree Govindajee Temple is situated adjacent to an imposing palace of the rulers of Manipur who held their sway in this kingdom before the British rule.
The twin-domed shaped Shree-Shree Govindajee Temple has a simple architectural design.
The annual primary attraction of the Shree-Shree Govindajee Temple is the series of festivals that are organized extolling Lord Krishna.
A marked feature of the fests organized during the year is the performance of the charming Manipuri dance during each such occasion.
KAINA HILLOCK
The Shree-Shree Govindajee atop the scenic Kaina hillock is a pilgrimage spot for the Hindus. It is situated 29 km from Imphal town and located at an altitude of 921 meters above the sea level. You can proceed to the spot by bus from Imphal via Thoubal.
A tourist attraction here is the Raas dance performed the Raas festival here.
The hillock has a temple which houses an image of Shree-Shree Govindajee carved out of a jack fruit tree that had grown there.
The popular legend is that this temple was constructed by the saint king of Manipur Shri Jai Singh Maharaja who is better known in Manipur history as Bhagya Chandra Shree-Shree Govindajee. One night he saw Shree-Shree Govindajee in a vision. Shree-Shree Govindajee asked him to construct the temple in the way it is now constructed.
